fancy sance

dan plays with a band that plays lots of covers... or all covers. they play weddings & other events. this last wednesday they played for the intel fun run. arlo had fun dancing to the music & playing on the playground that was nearby. we also were able to ride our bike to the show!

arlo's 3rd concert

this summer the 234th army band (the army band i am in) played several shows with Pink Martini for the Oregon! Oregon! show celebrating Oregon's sesquicentennial anniversary. It was an AMAZING show. even though we got there early, the lawn was totally packed and so we didn't have the best seats... so, here are a bunch of pictures of Arlo and Dan while we waited the 2 hours for the show to start. they are so adorable.

Battle Studies

NOVEMBER 17th

who else is excited for john mayer's new album?

because you should be.

ohhhh yes

Here is the first in a series...
The scope and quality of these videos will grow and get better as the album and the recording process does.

This experience is amazing; to take an idea from inception and watch it grow into a reality is beyond inspiring.

Hope you enjoy...

talented people

one of my old friends Chris Mai (we met back when we both worked at American Eagle... I would be back in the stock room folding and processing away to my own music, when the rappers weren't there. Chris noticed that I actually listened to good music ;) and we sparked up a friendship based on our love of music) is generous enough to share his music with me on my photography site!

{chris, stew, and myself waiting in line for the JM3 concert. 7 hours was worth front row}

as dan and i are working on my photography website (along with some help from others) i knew i wanted some awesome and original music on there. who would be better than Chris? not many people, that is for sure.

even though i haven't seen chris for ages and ages, he was kind enough to let me put some of his band's (In Good Company) work on the site when it goes up. really, these guys are better than most people on the radio.

a big huge THANK YOU to Chris and his talented band!

Here are some must see videos:

Original piece (that I love):

John Mayer cover:

Friend them on FB

Friend them on MySpace

Subscribe to them on YouTube

you will not regret it.
and listen for them when i launch my photography site (hopefully soooooon)

i am loving...

andrew bird (among many other things). last saturday dan and i "did that thing we like to do" (dan) and bought several new cd's from target. they have good deals and good artists. we were suprised and excited when we saw that they carried the new andrew bird album and bought it. of the cd's we purchased that day, it is my favorite and i just can't get enough. so far, "confes" is my favorite track.

you can go to his myspace page and listen to many songs if you feel so inclined... and you really should. the first five songs on the player are from the new CD.

i was amazed by him from the beginning... when i went to see nickel creek and he opened for them. i was loving his eccentricity and original sounds of violin, whistling, guitar, and the bells... looping. i have since seen him perform twice and am never let down.

here he is... performing one of the songs off of "noble beast"... it's not the best sound quality, but you can see how he loops. playing it all on his own. i am so sad i missed him this last time he came.

and here is an actual music video of a slightly older song:

The Vibrations

Dan works with a way cool guy, Uri. He has one of the coolest families I know of. They have 4 boys who have formed a band, The Vibrations... and for their ages (and for many ages), they are awesome musicians. Every time we go see them play a concert, I am completely impressed. They do some awesome covers (including Franz Ferdinand, Weezer, even Pink Floyd... among others)... and have even written some great original songs.

Here are some pictures from their most recent show. Go check out their website and listen to some of their songs.

my favorite christmas song

especially this version.

... and i also like this version. and it often will make me cry.

this song is just so humbling. if you really listen to the words... it's amazing.

....So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.

Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too,
pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,
Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum,
On my drum?

Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum.

the little drummer boy had nothing to give the Christ child, but he played his drum... all he could do. He played his best. We need to play our best.

mood

i really like her. this song feels good to my mood right now. that sounds way weird... but, i don't know how else to put it. enjoy.

there are recordings where she sounds better... but this video is the coolest looking.

i am obsessed

with this song.

i've heard her "chasing pavements" and didn't really like it. well, she was on SNL last LAST weekend and sounded AMAZING. Then she sang the above song... and this last Saturday we bought her CD, I can't stop listening.

we also picked up the new My Morning Jacket, "Evil Urges"

and:

and a costume for Lucy. we still haven't made ours.

happy 31st

Today is John Mayer's birthday. Yes, I am a big fan... but I just happened to be listening to KINK this morning in the shower and they were playing his music to celebrate. So, I decided to celebrate here!!!

if you haven't seen this... you MUST watch it. HILARIOUS

Gobbledigook

A little while ago we got the latest Sigur Ros album.
This post is far too late... but, this song (among many others on the album) is amazing.
Too bad we didn't want to shell out the ridiculous amounts of money it would have been to see them in concert next month.
Maybe they will come back someday when we are rich.

sorry the movie is boring and unchanging. but it sounded better than the video that was posted with changing pictures. just let it play while you proceed to check your email or something... it's worth it. If you feel like it, there are tons of awesome sigur ros videos on youtube to check out.

thanks for listening.

9.05.2008

woah.

how amazing is this website? i'll be spending part of my evening here while i edit some wedding photos.
although i'll be way too tempted to just watch the incredible 80's style.
i am in 80's heaven. if there is such a place.

8.08.2008

on the radio

some ear candy on the way home from yet another army band gig. it made me very happy and i even might have danced in the car... at a stop light... in my class A uniform.

{please excuse the one profane word}

free fallin

Often times I am not so impressed when most artists cover a song. I mean, Sheryl Crow should have not done "Sweet Child o' Mine"... and Sara Evans should have never done "I'll Be"... country ones are the worst (don't you agree? why country-fy a song? that is not how it's meant to be). However, John Mayer has never let me down in this area. See the following, from his new live DVD (which is in route to my mailbox as I write this). Thank you JM for doing a beautiful job. I really love John Mayer and honestly... he just keeps getting better and better. Much better than the days of "No Such Thing" and I was even quite fond of him then.

lucky

I love getting to know a new CD. You listen to it all the way through and you find songs you fall in love with right away.... love at first listen. Like this song:

FYI: Dan and I are going to learn and record this song, so nobody steal our thunder!

Then there are the songs that you listen to the first time and could care less for, then one day depending on the events of the day or your mood or your more intent listening, you realize how great it actually is. For me, a good CD is one where I can put it down for awhile, come back to it and fall in love with a new song. John Mayer CD's really do that for me... and so do Jason Mraz CDs. This is one of those songs.

Back to what first got me to post this blog. Jason Mraz's new CD is great. There are songs that right now I could care less for, but I have a feeling that could change soon. He is so talented and very dynamic.

Merry Christmas from Canada's own Festive Brass

These guys were great and really hilarious. Right after I took the video the trombone player on the end asks "so are we going to be on your facebook page tomorrow?" to which I replied... "no, but you'll be on my blog in about a week". Every time I turned the camera off they would do something funny and the best songs I didn't record... it was sad. But I got two really good ones! Here is just one because I don't want to sit through two video uploads... there is too much to do!
